In 1931, two sons of Lebanese immigrants, Alex and Lee George, started MDI in Hickory, North Carolina. In their eyes everyone should have the opportunity for a better life.

Our 90-year history is an interesting story of sacrifice, growth, and success. What began as a small family business, as one local newspaper described it, ?With little more than a bag of peanuts, an apple, and a stick of candy" is now one of the largest grocery wholesale companies on the East Coast.

Ninety years later the George family and MDI remain anchored to their values. Our optimism and entrepreneurial spirit has kept us strong during some of America?s toughest times. In fact, adversity has only made us stronger.

In July of 1982, MGC consolidated with Peoples Grocery from Orange and moved into the new warehouse.. Even though we were experiencing all of the trials of moving into a new location, our commitment to our customers never changed. In fact, we didn’t miss a single day of shipping product to all of our locations. Throughout this process, we invested heavily into our technology that would make our warehouse more efficient and our customer experience effortless.

Our current property has a warehouse of over 150,000 square feet of product which includes a 30,000 square foot freezer. We are large enough to supply all your business needs, but small enough to always be here for you!

The Mohawk tradition of unity and culture has been embraced by the Tarbell family for generations. Theresa "Bear", matriarch of the Tarbell family, started her own business, The Bear's Den Trading Post, on the Mohawk reservation with two gas pumps and a small Native gift shop in 1953. Through her teachings and strong work ethic, the Tarbell family has continued to push forward, making dynamic decisions and venturing into new markets.

After venturing into the tobacco market, the Tarbell family soon became one of the largest distributors of Native-made cigarettes on the Mohawk reservation and in New York State. After refining the distribution process for many years, the family realized that there was a void in the cigarette market for a high-quality, great tasting cigarette that people can afford to enjoy.
